8. | Gershom HOBART, Sr. was born Dec 1645, Hingham, Suffolk, (now Plymouth) Massachusetts (son of Peter HOBART and Elizabeth IBROOK); died 19 Dec 1707, Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; was buried His body was lost or destroyed . Notes: Reverend Gershom Hobart graduated from Harvard in 1667. He resided in Plymouth, Groton, and Hingham Massachusetts. He was ordained in Groton, where he was the pastor of the Congregational Church there. The minister and the congregation did not always live together harmoniously. There was much dissension about his salary and where the new meeting house would be built to replace the one burned by the Indians in the 1676 massacre. He was dismissed in Dec 1685, but continued to preach in Groton occasionally for almost 20 more years. Gershom lost two children in the second massacre of Groton on 27 Jul 1694. One was killed, and the other, nine year old Gershom, was held captive for nearly a year before being ransomed from his captors. Gershom married Sarah ALDIS 26 Apr 1675, Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Sarah was born 1652; died 14 Apr 1712, Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] |
