2. | Dr. George Aubrey ZENTMYER, Jr. was born 9 Aug 1913, North Platte, Lincoln, Nebraska (son of George Aubrey ZENTMYER and Mary Elizabeth STRAHORN); died 8 Feb 2003, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, California; was buried Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside Co., CA, SW cor. Section W-2. Notes: George migrated from Nebraska to Los Angeles with his parents and older brother John in 1918. He earned BA and MS degrees from UCLA, and later a PhD in Plant Pathology from UC Berkeley in 1838. After short stints at the Division of Forest Pathology at the USDA in San Francisco and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station at New Haven, Connecticut, where he also met and married his wife Dorothy, George settled into what would be a life-long tenure at the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of California, Riverside in 1944. He is best known for his work researching and developing avocado root stocks which proved resistant to root rot caused by the water mold Phytophthora Cinnamomi, which threatened the avocado industry in California and around the world. He was a sportsman, active in community affairs, and was widely honored professionally. George married Dorothy Anne DUDLEY 24 May 1941, New Haven, Connecticut. 3. | Dorothy Anne DUDLEY was born 11 Jan 1912, Charleston, Coles, Illinois (daughter of Dr. Gerald Brown DUDLEY and Esther Wilhoit SHOOT); died 5 Nov 2008, Belmont, San Mateo, California; was buried Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside, California, SW cor. Section W-2. Notes: Dorothy Dudley Zentmyer died November 5, 2008, in Belmont, California at age 96. Born in Charleston, Illinois, she graduated from Simmons College in Boston, and became a social worker specializing in foster children in New Haven, Connecticut, where she met and married George Zentmyer, a plant pathologist. They moved to Riverside in 1944, and she gave wholehearted support to his work at the Citrus Experiment Station and later at the University of California at Riverside. A loving, energetic and wise mother of their three girls, she contributed time and leadership skills to the PTA, the League of Women Voters and the UCR Campus Club. She was a vital member of the First Congregational Church, serving as deacon, trustee and choir member. Always interested in learning, she enjoyed the UCR community and savored her worldwide travels with George. A woman of dignity, she was gracious, and hospitable to the end. She leaves Elizabeth Dossa (Al), Jane Fernald (Geoff) and Susan Zentmyer (Clyde), all in the San Francisco Bay Area, and grandchildren Julia Dossa, Eli Fernald, Sarah Fernald, Andrea Kish and Jennifer LaMonte with great grandchildren Mia Kish and Grace LaMonte.

8. | Miles ZENTMYER was born 25 Jun 1842, Spruce Creek, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania (son of John ZENTMYER and Margaret GATES); died 18 Sep 1911, Schuyler, Colfax, Nebraska (pronounced 'Skyler'); was buried Schuyler Cemetery, Schuyler, Colfax, Nebraska - Plot: Cascade section, Lot 98. Notes: "MILES ZENTMYER, attorney and counselor at law. He does a large collection business for Eastern parties, and deals in real estate. He is also one of the proprietors of the Schuyler Herald, owned by Zentmyer & Holcomb. Mr. Zentmyer first located in Schuyler in January, 1873, emigrating from Huntingdon, Pa., where he was born June 25, 1842. He enlisted, August, 1862, in Company C, One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, in the nine months' service. He began the study of his profession in October, 1863, in the law office of Scott, Brown & Bailey, in his native town, where he remained; and also taught school several terms, etc., until February 25, 1865, when he again enlisted as a private; and March 1, 1865, he was appointed First Lieutenant of Company F., Seventy-seventh Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry. In his nine months' service he participated in battles of Antietam and Chancellorsville. He was discharged December 6, 1865, in Victoria, Texas, and was mustered out in Philadelphia, Pa., January 16, 1866. Eighteen months after being mustered out he entered the former law office and resumed his studies, and was admitted to the bar August, 1869, and began the practice of law in his native place, where he remained until he moved to Nebraska. Was married in Huntingdon, Pa., May 26, 1874, to Miss Jennie M. Crewitt, also a native of the latter place. They have one son, George Aubrey, born May 2, 1881. (three siblings who preceded George did not survive, but two sisters who were born after this was written did survive -Ed) Mr. Z. is a member of Acacia Masonic Lodge, No. 34; also I. O. O. F., Schuyler Lodge, No. 38. Was elected County Judge in fall 1881. He ran for Lieutenant-Governor of Nebraska on the State Democratic ticket in 1876.
