The towns of Nieuw Amsterdam (New Amsterdam) and Breuckelen (Brooklyn) as well as the other four towns of the Dutch colony New Netherland were conquered by the British in 1664 and collectively renamed New York, in honor of the Duke of York, who had sponsored the expedition.
