Old Ship Church, Hingham, Massachusetts
Old Ship Church, Hingham, Massachusetts
This is the only surviving 17th-century Puritan meetinghouse, and it is the oldest church which has been continuously used for worship in North America. The most distinctive feature of the building is its hammerbeam roof structure, as some of those working on the soaring building were no doubt shipwrights.

Pack Trip, Eastern Sierra, 1933
Pack Trip, Eastern Sierra, 1933
From the Zentmyer Collection. Family lore says George took his sons John and George Jr. on a pack trip in the Eastern Sierras after their High School graduations. This image is consistent with this story, and shows John and his father George, with George Jr. being the likely photographer. This is probably the start of the trip, as there are corrals and gear visible.

Pardoned by Gov. Thomas Mifflin
Pardoned by Gov. Thomas Mifflin
Christopher was fined 10 pounds in 1795 for operating a Tippling House, essentially an unlicensed drinking establishment. At this time, Christopher was living on his farm in present-day Rouzerville, which was a scant 1/8 mile off the Great Wagon Road. Who can blame him for seizing the opportunity . . . maybe the Governor was a customer!

Pennsylvania Herald and York General Advertiser, 12 Sep 1792
This newspaper records the Notice of Tax Sale for Bernhard's farm just north of Arendtsville, Pennsylvania. Since he was apparently living with his son Jacob Santmyer shortly thereafter, it is presumed the sale went forward as scheduled.

Plat Map of Bernhard's Farm in Warwick Township
Plat Map of Bernhard's Farm in Warwick Township
The farm was 'Patented' from Daniel Snider on 20 August 1766, which means that was when Bernhard came into title. It is likely however, that he worked the farm as early as 1754, when the birth of Görg was recorded at the White Oak Church there.
