George was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for his entire working life, which began at age 16. His last job was as Chief Dispatcher for the railroad at Los Angeles, from 1923 until 1945.

Lieutenant Miles Zentmyer was the second Commandant of this facility, which opened in 1887 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Originally built for Union veterans of the Civil War, it eventually accepted Confederates as well.
