Joel served his city and county in a number of capacities including being Rock Island County treasurer. In 1836, Joel Wells Sr. posted a $5,000 bond and promised to surrender all books, papers, and money when another person succeeded him as county treasurer of Rock Island County, Illinois. Davenport, Bartlett, and Joel Wells Jr. co-signed the bond. In 1840, after Joel Wells Sr. died, the People, for the use of the Rock Island County Commissioners, sued Davenport, Bartlett, and Joel Wells Jr. to collect the bond. The commissioners charged that Joel Wells Sr. failed to turn over $430 found on the dead body of Brich, $83.87 from Brich's estate, and $2,569 in notes that Brich held. Davenport and others pleaded that Wells had given all the money and notes to Conway, the probate judge and public administrator for Brich, but the jury found for the commissioners and awarded $4,209.20. Davenport and others retained Logan and Lincoln and appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court. The parties reached an agreement, and Davenport dismissed the appeal.

April 1843 Joel Wells bought the land adjacent to his own, on which most of Moline was built. This included the D.B. Sears tract west of his, the Timothy Wood farm on the east and the Edwards tract of 170 acres. June 23, 1843 D.B. Sears, Charles Atkinson, Joel Wells, and a surveyor named P.H. Ogilvie, with others, met in Mr. Sears barn and drew up a plat for the town of Moline. On Mar. 13, 1844 Moline's first post office opened. David B. Sears served as first postmaster. Other early postmasters included: Dr. Wells, George W. Bell, Joseph J. Jackson, Absalom B. Williams, appointed in July 1857, William Kearns, who
served from 1861-65 and 1869-73.

Joel Wells, Sr., credited as one of the founding fathers of the city of Moline, Illinois, died on September 3, 1838 in Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois. He was buried in the Old Riverside Cemetery in Moline. His wife Mary Wells died eight years later, on December 4, 1846 in Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois, and was laid to rest next to her husband of over 40 years in the Old Riverside Cemetery.

516 John Lewis had a lot of sons, big tough and many thought ruthless. It is said people were afraid to confront these men. They were also hard working and had many friends. There were stories handed down about the families and many can be found in books in the Randolph County history at the Ashboro Library.

524 John Wesley Zentmyer was a special grandson to Christopher and Barbara Zentmeyer. When Christopher's will was written in 1824, there was a special provision for John to receive two hundred dollars from the estate at Christopher's death. By 1824 Christopher had as many as eighteen additional grandchildren, none of whom were similarly provided for. The will also indicated that one John Zentmyer was living in the area at that time, and since Christopher's son John was living in Brownsville, Virginia by then, the John residing locally must have been John Wesley Zentmyer. The will also provided for a shed to be built and finished adjoining John Zentmyer's house for Christopher to enjoy during the remainder of his natural life. So it appears John Wesley Zentmyer and his wife Eleanor cared for grandparents Christopher and Barbara into their old age, and were thereby amply rewarded. ZENTMYER, John Wesley (I87125)

529 Jonas's younger brother Isaac was killed at the battle of Bunker Hill and after learning of this, Jonas said, "I will go and take his place." He enlisted March 17, 1777, at Hollis, New Hampshire, under Lieut. James Gould, and served in Capt. House's Company, Col. Cilley's Regiment and Stark's Brigade. (Fourth Company, First Regiment, New Hampshire troops) While retreating from Ticonderoga, at the Battle of Hubberton on July 5, 1777, Jonas was hit by a musket ball in the right cheek. It knocked out three teeth, passed between the windpipe and the neck bones and lodged near the left collar bone. When extracted three days later with a pocket knife, it had settled several inches below the collar bone. After receiving this shot, he coughed incessantly and was thought to have gone into consumption. (tuberculous -Ed) Jonas was furloughed, and returned to his farm. One day while out in the field watching others put up hay, soldiers arrived looking for deserters. This infuriated him, and grabbing a pitchfork he shouted, "Get out of here or I'll pitch you to hell faster than all the devils can stow you away." His grandson, Isaac Newton Hobart, relating this story, always added that he afterwards become converted. The tooth, lost at the time, was coughed up by Jonas sixteen months later. Then, having recovered, he returned to the army where he served until his discharge in January 1, 1781. Pension: S35416 (NH); Pension Roll, July 5, 1812, April 24, 1816, April 26, 1819; transferred from Vermont. HOBART, Corporal Jonas (I85678)

531 Joseph's surname was spelled "Bruotschi" in the birth record, pronounced "BROOT-she" in German. We do not know how the pronunciation changed to "bru-SHAY" here in the United States. One possibility is because Jeanette Brutsché consistently advertised offering the finest in 'French Millinery,' she felt the need to be seen as being from France. It should also be noted that in the 1880 Census Joseph Brutsché, the son of Joseph and Jeanette, living in Denison Texas, listed both of his parents as having been born in France instead of Germany and Switzerland. This could have related either to his mother's business, or his own situation in Texas, where Germans were disliked because of their Civil War pacifism and reluctance to fight for the Confederacy. BRUTSCHÉ, Joseph (I87190)

532 Joseph's year of birth was variously recorded as follows: Birth Record 1801, Ship's Manifest 1802, Naturalization 1804, 1850 US Census 1805, Death Certificate 1801.

BRUTSCHÉ, Joseph (I87190)

533 Joseph, Jeanette, and their son Henry were originally buried at Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia. In 1956 Monument Cemetery was condemned by the City of Philadelphia and sold to Temple University, and all of the graves there were exhumed and relocated to Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge, Pennsylvania. Most of the existing headstones were dumped en masse into the Delaware River near the present-day Betsy Ross Bridge to protect the shoreline from erosion.

534 Joseph, Jeanette, and their son Henry were originally buried at Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia. 550 Leah at the time of her marriage was 26, five years older than her new husband. By the time her last child, Charlotte, was born Leah was 44 years old. Little Charlotte died soon after her birth. I believe, based on the age of Leah, the death of the infant and the fact that Harrison was remarried by 1869, that Leah died of complications of childbirth. I suspect she died following the birth in 1867 or at least early in 1868. As to the place of death, I think a search should be done in Hardy Co., WV or Allegany Co., MD. UPDATE: Recently located information indicates that another child was born to Leah & Harrison after Charlotte. Fanny was born in 1868 in Allegany Co., MD and died after 1870 but prior to 1880. With this new information, I strongly suspect Leah died and is buried in Allegheny Co, MD
