Photos | Johannes Zentmeyer's Birth Record From the archives of the Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society. The record shown is from the Manor Land Reformed Church (now Zion United Church of Christ) in New Providence, Strasburg, Pennsylvania. Written in German script, translation: "Johannes born in Aug 1763 parents are Bernhard Zentmeyer and Catharina, sponsor is Johannes Lauman" (Likely the same Johannes Lauman who married Magdalena Zentmeyer) Image by Gary Zentmyer
History of the Lutheran Church in Virginia and East Tennessee This volume claims that Johannes was among the New River Lutheran settlers in 1749. This would have been difficult, as Johannes was not born until 1763. The Moravian Archives confirmed for us that Johannes was not among the New River settlers in 1749. But this volume correctly notes that he was a founder of Zion Lutheran, as Johannes Mayer, in the following paragraph. Image by Gary Zentmyer
Letter from the Moravian Archives This letter debunks the claim made in the book above, namely that Johannes had been seen by Rev. Schnell in New River in 1749, prior to his birth.
History of Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia Johannes was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and not in Germany, and Cave Spring was in Botetourt County when Johannes lived there. And John N. Zentmeyer was born in Montgomery County (now Floyd County) not at Cave Spring. Image by Gary Zentmyer

Jan Zentmeyer, a geologist and descendant of Johannes Zentmeyer, examines Cave Spring in 2012. The spring bubbles up from the gravel floor of the cave, is about 16 - 18 inches deep, and introduces about 100,000 gallons per day into Mudlick Creek. Image by Gary Zentmyer
