He was there during the attack on Pearl Harbor when they were shelled by the Japanese as they returned from Pearl Harbor. He was a defender of the island in telephone communication during the Battle of Midway. He attended radar school in Hawaii and was shipped to Russell Island in the Solomon Islands.
