  Notes	Arthur was a soil scientist with the Bureau of Soils, U.S. Department of Agriculture. He authored twenty or so pamphlets, each with a large multi-colored foldout map, about local soil conditions in various western localities, especially with regard to their potential for arable farming. I knew him as a retiree living on his property in Porterville, California, which was full of orange trees. He would send us a case of oranges every year. He was a kind and thoughtful man, and I am his namesake.
