  Notes	1801 James Sr. granted land in Chesterfield Co. to James Jr., Map Book 15, Page 99 1820 US Census in Stokes, North Carolina as 'Robinson' with 4 persons, ages are correct for James and Anna Mabe 1830 US Census in Stokes, North Carolina, ages are correct for James and Sarah Burton, after James' Marriage Bond to Sarah Burton in 1828, unclear who the six children were. 1830 US Census also has Anna Robertson in Stokes, North Carolina, single with 3 children. 1840 US Census in Patrick, Virginia, 4 persons, ages are correct for James and Ruth Young 1850 US Census in Patrick, Virginia, 6 persons, wife Ruth, ages are correct for James and Ruth Young. Birthplace Virginia, birth year 1775, occupation 'Miller.' Also lists children Michael, Edmund, Abigail, and Christine. A male descendant of our James Robertson was given a YDNA test. Two of the close YDNA matches, George Thomas Robison and Matthew Lee Robertson, both claim James Robertson who died in 1748 in Louisa Co. Virginia as their earliest known ancestor. This James Robertson may be the connection to our line. This James and our James' common ancestor is John Robertson Other close YDNA matches are Walter Robison, Jessy Roberson, and Ernest Carroll Roberson all of whom claim James Roberson 1737-1828 and Mary Fuqua 1740-1822 as their earliest known ancestors, but nothing further is know about their ancestry. Our assumption is that these connections originate in Scotland, and our common ancestor is heretofore unknown.

  Notes	Researcher Angus P. Robinson (1925-2000) was the first person to document that our James b.1771 was the son of James b.1736. However, Angus also claimed that our James married a Sarah Bass on 22 Jun 1781, when he would have been ten years old. We have seen no evidence for this unlikely event, but in fact, Sarah Bass was bonded in marriage on that date, but to a James Gates. But the 1798 marriage of our James Robertson to Nancy Sims is actually of record, and is cited in The Virginia Genealogist, V.46 #2 p.148. "I have found evidence of a James Robertson who came to Stokes County with a son Daniel but I have not found proof that he was our James Robertson. I know he was probably over forty when he married Anna Mabe (if he married her) so it's really possible he was married at LEAST once before." Researcher Velpo Robertson James Robertson and Nancy Sims were both grandchildren of George Robertson, but their grandmothers were Mildred Bernard and Jane Gates, so they were second cousins?

  Notes	Researcher Velpo Robertson believes James and Anna never divorced but simply went their separate ways. But the recent discovery of the actual marriage of James Robertson and Nancy Sims suggests that James probably never actually married Anna Mabe, Sarah Burton nor Ruth Young.

  Notes	Our Robison 'family lore' holds that James and Sarah died, and the children were parceled out to be raised by relatives. We did find their four children in the 1850 US Census living with four different families, including Robert, our ancestor, living with Sarah Burton's uncle Robert Burton and his wife Lucy. And while James Robertson had clearly not died, the fact that Robert's son John wrote "Deceased was orphaned at the age of four" on Robert's death certificate leads us to conclude that Sarah Burton died in 1837, the same year James promised to marry Ruth Young. So no time for mourning.
