Less detail
Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Leah CHILCOTT was born 8 Nov 1823, Lost River, Hardy Co., West Virginia; died 1868, Westernport, Allegany Co., Maryland.

    Notes:

    Leah at the time of her marriage was 26, five years older than her new husband. By the time her last child, Charlotte, was born Leah was 44 years old. Little Charlotte died soon after her birth. I believe, based on the age of Leah, the death of the infant and the fact that Harrison was remarried by 1869, that Leah died of complications of childbirth. I suspect she died following the birth in 1867 or at least early in 1868. As to the place of death, I think a search should be done in Hardy Co., WV or Allegany Co., MD. UPDATE: Recently located information indicates that another child was born to Leah & Harrison after Charlotte. Fanny was born in 1868 in Allegany Co., MD and died after 1870 but prior to 1880. With this new information, I strongly suspect Leah died and is buried in Allegheny Co, MD

    Notes:

    When James and Helen married they were both living in Allegany Co., MD. James listed his occupation as a miner on their marriage application which was issued on 20 August 1875. There was no record of the marriage as the minister did not return the license. Helen was listed as a maid of 17 and James as a 21 year old. When they were first married, the couple lived in Keyser, WV. They were probably in Keyser until about 1884. From Keyser, the family moved to MT. Pleasant, PA. It's confusing as to how long they remained in MT. Pleasant. Interview notes show the family in Scottsdale, PA from 1890 to 1895. But, these same notes list Minnie's 1888 birth in Scottsdale, F. Ethel's 1890 birth in Scottsdale and Margaret's 1895 birth in Star Junction, PA. F. Ethel Santmyer Rowley supplied all the above information. However, the copy of Ethel's and Stephen's marriage certificate gives MT. Pleasant as her place of birth. I think she probably remembered her place of birth better at age 21 than at age 85. This would place them in MT. Pleasant until May 1890 and would still allow for the move to Scottsdale in 1890. Margaret's birth in June of 1895 places them in Star Junction and still allows for them to be in Scottsdale in the earlier part of that year. They remained in Star Junction until 1918 when they moved to Homestead, PA. The family lived on a rented farm in Scottsdale. James was working for the B&O Railroad. He was an engineer on the passenger train that ran from Scottsdale to South Bend (an area in Westmoreland Co.). B&O wanted to move the family to South Bend, but before the move transpired there was a train wreck at South Bend. His wife, Helen, then refused to move as she didn't want him to have that dangerous run. James then took a more local run and the family moved to Star Junction. It appears that the family attended the Methodist Episcopal Church during their early years in Star Junction. Somewhere around 1902 they were attending the Baptist Church, Helen was baptized here on 17 December 1905. I had no record of James being baptized, but would have to guess, he was. Around the 1920's they became Christian Scientists - perhaps when they moved to Homestead. James belonged to the Knights of Pythias, Prospect Lodge 507, Star Junction and to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Tygarts Valley Lodge No. 284. Upon moving to Homestead, James operated a grocery and confectionery store at 141 East 16th Avenue from 1918 until January 1922, when he retired. He and Helen then went to live with their daughter Ethel and family in Hayes, PA. He died while visiting at his son Oscar's home in Star Junction. The Ira Blair Funeral Home in Perryopolis handled the funeral arrangements. James was buried in MT Washington Cemetery in Perryopolis, PA.

    Notes:

    Emily married sometime after 1880 to Dr. Dean Stefferman. She married a second time, name unknown, but, according to family lore, he was also a doctor.

    2008 Apr - Correspondence received from Sher and Larry Heasley, note that Emma was 15 at the time of her first marriage.* They also feel that mention of names within family papers may indicate that Emma was also married to William John Allen and John Blaine. In addition to Margaret Lillian Hockney, other children may include:
    Annabelle (maiden name unknown) Ashbough born about 1885
    George Allen
    Charles Blaine
    Curly Rosa Blaine (25 July, no year)
    Fannie Bell Blaine (3 July, no year)

    * Emma is listed as living in the household of her father Harrison and 2nd wife Catherine in both the 1870 and 1880 census. It was my assumption that her marriage to Dean Stefferman was sometime after 1880 based upon her living at home in the 1870 and 1880 census. I was simply told by my grandmother that Emma was married to Dr Dean Stefferman and married a second time to a man who may have also been a doctor.

    Notes:

    William Harrison (Harry) was probably born in Moscow/Barton area of Allegany Co., MD. (There is a slim chance that the family lived in the Keyser, WV area at the time of his birth). Family lore tells that the Santmyer boys were "real hell raisers" and Harry was certainly not one to pass up a good time. Harry supposedly was a well-meaning roustabout who felt obligated to share himself with all the girls. As well as a drinker, it seems that Harry was also a gambler. In fairness to Harry, perhaps with the loss of his young wife and third child, he was "drowning his sorrows" in women, booze and gambling. They lived their life on the wild side, worked hard and died tragic deaths. From the tales I heard, I imagined the Santmyer brothers donned in cowboy boots and hats, and always chewing a wad of tobacco - but the few pictures I've seen, portray them more like refined bankers.

    Harry possibly married again after Sadie's death; although, his sister, Fanny Ethel Santmyer Rowley, insists this is not the case. There was an entry in the family Bible under "Marriages"....Harry Wm Santmyer (name also appears as Harry Wm. for marriage to Sadie) - Myrtle Renmyer 30 Dec. (no year is listed, but it appears between 1913 and 1921 entries). Additional information, received from his grand-daughter, Anna Mae Waggett Walls, states that Harry never remarried.

    07-25-1924 Gates No 1 Brownsville, PA - 10 died as a result of the explosion
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Os was killed during the winter of 1925/1926. He lost his life by saving the life of another miner. Os pushed the miner out of the path of a run away mine car, but wasn't able to get himself out of the path. He was crushed against the mine wall by the run away cars. According to family lore he was working for a mining company out of WV and they made a large sum settlement to his mother, Helen Marr Shaw Santmyer. This money supposedly made its way to George and Minnie Santmyer Bowman. At the time of Oscar's death Helen was living with Fanny Ethel Santmyer Rowley (She had gone to live with Ethel's family after the death of James Jacob). Minnie arranged for Os to be laid out at her home in Connellsville, Pa. Minnie then invited her mother to live with her and George. Helen lived with them only a short time and was sent back to live with Fanny Ethel. By that time the settlement money had been spent.
    NOTE - January 2006 UPDATE: According the information contained in his obituary published 27 Oct 1925 in the Connellsville Daily Courier Oscar was working for the National Fuel Company in Morgantown, WV. He was killed by a moving mine cars, but the article doesn't mention that it was a run away car or that he pushed anyone out of its path. The article states that Oscar was attempting to cross between an empty car setting on one track and a moving trip on the adjoining track. In the process he was knocked down and run over by one of the cars in the moving trip. His body was severely mangled, but no mention is made if his death was immediate. The article states that funeral director J.E. Sims brought the body to the Bowman home in Connellsville where a brief service was to be held the following day. A second service was to follow later the same day at the Star Junction Baptist Church with Rev. A.A. Blake, pastor of the Flatwoods Baptist Church officiating. The only undertaker identified on Oscar's death certificate is Jenkins Brown of Morgantown. Oscar's obituary also states that he is survived by his mother who makes her home with the Bowman's.
    COMMENT: Three sources (family lore, death certificate and obituary) give a mix of information. Which is the most reliable? Other than the cause of death, I believe they are probably equal in reliability as information contained in an obituary is from a family member, as is much of the information in a death certificate. The family lore information was supplied mainly by Oscar's sister Ethel Santmyer Rowley; while the obituary information was most likely supplied by his sister Minnie Santmyer Bowman who resided in Connellsville. I find it rather strange that Oscar's mother's name wasn't mentioned, especially if she was actually living with the Bowman's in Connellsville. Based on a collection of family photos taken in this time frame, I believe that Helen M. Shaw Santmyer was living with Ethel and not Minnie prior to Oscar's death. I find it extremely strange that Oscar was taken to the Bowman residence for a service prior to the service in the church. Harry Santmyer died in 1923 and their father, James J Santmyer, died in 1922. They were not taken to her home. The family lived most of their life in Star Junction; they were well known there and the cemetery was in nearby Perryopolis. I can't help but think that Minnie had some ploy in mind. It was a well established family fact that Minnie and Ethel could not and did not tolerate each other.
    Dies Under Trip
    In National Mine
    In attempting to cross between an empty car standing on one track and a moving trip on the adjoining track, Oscar T. Santmyer, 47 years old, motor boss for the National Fuel Company at its mines at National, five miles south of Morgantown, W Va, was instantly killed Monday morning. He was knocked down and one car of the moving trip passed completely over his body, badly mangling it. Mr. Santmyer had been employed by the National Fuel Company for the past three years. Prior to that time he was employed by another coal company in the Morgantown district.
    Mr Santmyer was born at Moscow, Md., a son of James J. Santmyer, deceased, and Mrs Helen M Shaw Santmyer. He was well known at Star Junction, where he spent the greater part of his life from boyhood days. For about 25 years he was employed by the Washington Coal & Coke Company at Star Junction. From there he went to Morgantown where he secured employment. He was a member of the Star Junction Baptist Church. He spent eight years traveling abroad.
    Mr Santmyer is survived by his mother, three sisters, Minnie, wife of G E Bowman of Connellsville; Margaret, wife of R C Beighley of Wilkensburg; Ethel, wife of J G Riley [should be S J Rowley] of Pittsburgh, and one brother, Donald, on USSHF Alexander.
  20. 31.  Minnie Louisa SANTMYER Descendancy chart to this point (5.James2, 1.Leah1) was born 22 Jan 1888, Scottdale, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania; died 16 Aug 1974, Salinas, Monterey Co., California; was buried Aug 1974, Sacramento, California.
    Notes:
    According to family lore, Minnie, the oldest of the three girls, always acted weak and faint so she could escape helping with the household tasks. They were raised to be proper young ladies and Minnie took well to this role. While her mother pampered her, thinking she was a sickly child, Fanny Ethel and Margaret did the chores. Minnie sat and practiced her sewing stitches and the proper way to hold her teacup. It seems this pampering went to her head and thus, she always wanted the biggest and the best. And, why not? She and George lived in Perryopolis in 1923, but by the time of Oscar's death (winter of 1924/25) they were living in Connellsville. A short time after, they moved to a beautiful big home
    (presumably in Connellsville) that supposedly was financed in part with the settlement Helen Santmyer received for Oscar's death.
  21. 32.  Fanny Ethel SANTMYER Descendancy chart to this point (5.James2, 1.Leah1) was born 8 May 1890, Scottdale, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania; died 8 Jun 1980, Coraopolis, Moon Twp, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania; was buried 11 Jun 1980, Perryopolis, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania at Mt Washington Cemetery.
    Notes:
    Fanny Ethel Santmyer Rowley was called Ethel by all who knew her -but to her grandchildren she was just "Mom", a name, which I as her first grandchild, bestowed upon her. I think she had a difficult life. I'm not saying her life was unhappy, but I think there were some very hard times. As a young girl she was captivated by Stephen's charm and good looks. Most girls of 21 would be pleased and encouraged with the attentions of a man 10 years their senior, and, indeed, she was. She was falling in love - and that should have been the happy beginning. Instead, her parents refused to allow her to be courted by Stephen. I believe, because of his age, they thought him too worldly and a lady's man. It troubled her deeply to go against her parents, but she continued to see Stephen away from under their watchful eyes. Love blossomed! They eloped! They were married at the McBroom family hotel on 8th Avenue in Homestead, Pa. The hotel was run by Margaret and John McBroom, Stephen's aunt and uncle. Ethel and Steve lived here in the hotel until 1913. This should have been such a happy time for Ethel and it would have been except that her Papa had disowned her. He ban her from visiting and refused to go to see her. Her mother did visit her after a while. In 1914, she and Steve had moved to Flatwoods, Pa. It was here that their first child, James Richard (named for his grandfathers), was born. It was after the birth of James that Papa eased up on his stand toward Ethel and Steve's marriage. The family accepted Steve, and once they really got to know him, they loved him dearly.
    "Mom" always had a special story to tell. Her bedtime stories were far better than any story from a book. Sometimes they were scary, other times they were like fairy tales, but most often they were about kids just like me. As I grew into my teens and young adulthood, the bedtime stories were replaced with talking about my interests and friends. It was during these years that we talked a lot about her parents and siblings. After a time I began to feel as if I had actually known all of them. Her stories of her family were so vivid, that they seemed to come alive to me. I never tired of hearing her talk of her family and her growing up years. This was actually the beginning of my interest in the "family tree".
    Notes:
    In 1923 Don was in the Merchant Marines. In 1924 his ship was caught in the typhoon that hit Tokyo Yokohama killing thousands of Japanese.
    After rambling all over the world, he settled down and became a successful businessman in Seattle. He married again - he and Kate had no children together; Kate had a grown son from a previous marriage.
    Donald died from a gunshot wound to the head. It was ruled a suicide. The family has always felt that he was murdered by his step-son. Donald was in bed, the revolver placed into the left side of his mouth - the bullet exited through the right temple. Donald was right handed. If he shot himself, it would mean that he held the revolver in his left hand and squeezed the trigger with his left index finger. It would seem unlikely that a right-handed person would use his left hand to end his life. Donald's family in PA wanted the case re-opened, but were not successful in convincing the Seattle authorities.
    Notes:
    Margaret was named for her mothers aunt, Margaret A. Shaw Rees. Margaret and Ethel were close during their growing up years. After the girls married, this same closeness was enjoyed between the Beighley and Rowley families. They spent much of their time together as one big happy family. Today that closeness remains between their children even though they live on opposite coastlines. I can imagine how hard it was for Margaret and Ethel when the entire Beighley family, parents, children, children's spouses and grandson, moved to Sacramento, CA
