There is a Bernhard Nicholas Santmyer b.1735 listed in FamilySearch IGI and elsewhere as the father of Jacob and George Zentmeyer, which we believe to be an unfortunate fabrication by a misguided LDS compiler, combining our ancestor Bernhard Zentmeyer b.1740 with another actual immigrant, Nicholas Sandmeier, who arrived on 9 Oct 1775 on the good ship King of Prussia. I have convinced FamilySearch to quarantine this record, although no one can remove it entirely except for its contributor, who will not respond to us. This bogus record also lists the surname of Bernhard's first wife as 'Luther,' for which we have found no evidence, see Catharina LNU, but unfortunately this fabricated 'Luther' record has generated entries on 60+ trees on Ancestry.com.

Notes:

Jacob and Jane moved from Frederick Co. to Shenandoah Co. after 1794 and before 1810.* Jacob served in the Virginia Militia from Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia in the 1790's. He possibly served in the Revolutionary War. As only Jane signed the marriage permission for Barney in 1816, it is a strong indication that Jacob had died prior to that date.

*The sections of Frederick and Shenandoah Counties, where they lived, were very close together. This area later became part of Warren Co. when it was formed in 1836.

*Present spelling is Santmyer, at least in my branch of Santmyer's, and also in Glenn's. Other branches spell it as Santmyers and Santymire. Of all the names in my Family Tree, this is the one name I have encountered with the most different spellings. Some spellings are so far removed that they are difficult to recognize as Santmyer. Spelling variations: Santmyer, Santmyers, Santmire, Santmier, Santmiers, Santmeyer, Santymire, Santemeyer, Santamyer, Santimire, Santingere, St. Myer, St. Meyer, Sauntmire, Sanbaire, Santaire, Saintmyers, Sanskrives, St. Moyers, Sandmeyer, Saulmire and Sandmeier.

Johannes Zentmeyer, grandson of Johann Bernhard Zentmeyer, emigrant ancestor of the Zentmeyers in the US. The surname was also recorded as 'Centmeyer,' 'Sentmeier,' 'C. Meyer,' 'C. Mayer,' 'St. Moyer,' and 'St. Mire.' Johannes married Barbary Windle about 1790. He was an early member of the Little River church, later renamed Zion Lutheran Church, which still stands in Floyd, Virginia. Rev. Robert J. Miller, a circuit preacher, wrote in 1813, "In the evening we went home with Mr. Zentmeyer, who appears to have a sense of divine things, and has a serious and promising family of children."

It is not clear why Johannes is listed in the 1810 and 1820 Census in Christiansburg, and in the 1830 Census in (La) Fayette. But there can be no doubt as to the identity of these three families, as the number and ages of the wife and children in the Censuses exactly match Johannes' family.

"The settlement at Mather's Mill, on the Miami, (Miami river, Ed) on the Lebanon & Wilmington road, was earlier than 1807, David Van Schoyck and Lewis Rees being there before that time. Lewis Rees built the mill in 1807, when it was disposed of to Richard Mather, who settled there the same year. George Zentmire settled the same year some distance below the mill, and built the dam for Mather. His cabin was by a spring below the mill. In addition to the mill Richard Mather set up a store and smith shop; he brought with him Jacob Ashmead and Richard Taylor as millers. Jacob Horn, a blacksmith; Jacob Longstreth, storekeeper; Samuel Couden, an Irishman; John Frazee and others came the same reason. George Zentmire was a Virginian (George lived in Virginia, but was born in Pennsylvania -Ed) of German descent, spoke the German language fluently and was a Revolutionary soldier. (actually, War of 1812 -Ed) George Zentmire purchased a farm on the river below Freeport, (Freeport was renamed Oregonia in 1882 -Ed) where he died May 20, 1836; his wife, Elizabeth Dunn, died February 18, 1854. Their family, four sons and four daughters, are scattered, one son, Rev. Samuel Zentmire, living at Morrow. The river at this time was amply stocked with fish; brush drags were made to be used as seines, and great quantities were obtained. Fifteen or more deer in one herd was a common sight. Many of the oldest inhabitants assert with great earnestness, that a fight with Indians on the Zentmire farm, and also a short distance above Freeport, took place sometime previous to the first settlement, but no direct evidence of such events can be obtained." --History of Warren County, Ohio, W. Daniel SANTMYERS

(2.Jacob², 1.Johann¹) was born 1814, Shenandoah Co., Virginia; died 1897, Warren Co., Virginia; was buried Nov 1897, Old Frederick Cemetery, Waterlick, Warren Co., Virginia.

Notes:

Daniel is buried is buried in the Old Frederick Cemetery here in Warren Co. Va. It is located near the Waterlick area today. You can read the info on Daniel?s headstone that says he died in 1897 at 77 years old. There is a slight problem there as that reporting of his age would have him being born four years after his father died.

His wife Amelia, as shown on the marriage bond, also know as Millie, Milla, and Mildred Ann, misrepresented his age on every census until he was at home at the time the 1880 census was taken where he stated he was 68. She also changed her age on every census.

Daniel was most probably born in 1812-1813. If he was born later than that date he would have been drafted in the Confederate Army in 1864 when the draft age was 50. He was not listed in the Home Guard as a person too old to serve but still be required to fight if needed.

Ron Santmyers

I have not yet found definite proof that Daniel is the son of Jane Knapp and Jacob Santmire. However, he resided only a few doors from Jane Knapp Santmire (1850 Warren Co., VA Census) and his dob was just one year later than Leah Santmyers (d/o Jacob and Jane Knapp Santmire). This certainly is not proof, but could be a lead as to the parentage of Daniel.

Although the 1850 Census lists her birthplace as Roanoke, Roanoke did not exist in 1792. Roanoke County was formed in 1838, the town of Big Lick was established in 1852 and renamed Roanoke in 1882. Her birthplace was likely Cave Spring. She is listed as living with her brother David in 1850 and 1860.

According to a letter written by John William Zentmeyer to Rev. William DeShazo, Catharine and Burke Priddy moved to Ohio. In The History of Kansas City, Missouri, it is written that soon after 1832 they moved from Virgina to Warren County, Ohio. And that Burke owned a plantation and a number of slaves in Virginia, but became a teacher in Ohio. The 1840 Census has Burke Priddy in Union, Warren Ohio.

Several original sources claim Johannes and Barbary moved from Cave Spring to Montgomery County near present-day Floyd in 1800, however a poem written by Catherine's brother David claims the move was after 1802.

"Johannes died in 1844 and was the father of John N. Zentmeyer. John N. had been clerk of the courts from about 1837-1855. As a matter of fact, the courthouse had a pic of every court clerk since the beginning of time - except for John N. Zentmeyer. So I gave them one and it now hangs in the courthouse with the others. John moved the family to Mayo Forge, Virginia in 1855 for benefit of his wife who was in in poor health - it was much warmer in Mayo Forge than up on Floyd mountain. His kids, Peter and Edwin, lived in Mayo Forge, Peter had three boys, one was my Grandfather, John Edwin. By the way, the house in Mayo Forge, built in 1852, every brick, nail and board made on site by slaves, is still owned by the Zentmeyers. Interesting stuff." - Gentry Zentmeyer, Martinsville, Virginia.

According to a letter written by John William Zentmeyer to Rev. William DeShazo, John was a surveyor prior to becoming Clerk of the Court. After his marriage to Martha Penn, John and Martha made their home in the Floyd Courthouse. They moved to Patrick County in 1855, and John engaged in the mercantile business in Mayo Forge for the remainder of his life. Sons Edwin and Peter were associated with him.

According to Chataigne's 1888-89 Virginia Business Directory for Patrick County, 'Zentmeyer & Sanders' were Tobacco Manufacturers in Mayo Forge.

The paternal grandfather served as a soldier in the War of 1812. David Zentmire was a carpenter by trade and followed that pursuit in early manhood, but afterward turned his attention to farming and became fairly well-to-do. His political allegiance was given to the Whig Party and he afterward supported the Republican Party. He married Diana Minick, who was born in Pennsylvania and was a member of the Quaker or Friends church. She represented one of the old Pennsylvania Dutch families. By her marriage she became the mother of the following named: Angeline, the wife of Robert J. Notes:

Daniel and Susan lived in Riverton, VA, just outside Front Royal, Shenandoah Co. He and three of his sons were in the Civil War. Daniel served in the Cavalry as he owned a horse; his sons served in the Infantry. After the War, he, Susan and the younger children moved to Barton, MD. He was listed as a cabinet maker in the census. Samuel's first wife, Caroline, died in childbirth in 1883; Daniel and Susan moved back to Riverton to help care for Samuel's three children. Daniel went to work for the Warren Manufacturing Company in Riverton where Samuel also worked.

Jacob M. SANTMYERS

Notes:

Jacob and Harriet moved their family to Davis Twp., LaFayette Co., Missouri in November 1856. They remained here until 1875 and then moved Tarant Co., Texas. Jacob served six months in the Confederate Army in the Sixth Regiment Missouri State Guards under Captain Trent. Jacob spent his life farming and was a miller by trade. He was a Democrat in politics and he and his wife were members of the regular Baptist Church. After Jacob's death, Harriet moved back to Missouri. Information contributed by Gerilee Santmyers

Jacob Santmyers was the miller at Bell Grove Plantation in Middletown, Virginia. He was a very important person to the Hite family. Upon Ann Maury Hite's death, the family asked if Jacob wanted to buy anything before the property was auctioned. Jacob bought a pair of mares and some linens. A store ledger has recently surfaced in which Jacob's name appears around 1840, apparently for the purpose of buying and selling goods on behalf of Belle Grove Plantation. Cattle, horses, hogs, and wheat were sold, and supplies were purchased on behalf of the Plantation. So he was an early business agent for the Hite family. This was just before he headed out for Missouri. He did have a problem with Henry Trout, a wagon maker here in Front Royal, as he had to sue him to get the wagon he had paid for. - Ron Santmyers

William Harrison SANTMYER

Notes:

According to family lore, Harrison Santmyer, supported the South during the Civil War. I was told by my Grandmother (Fanny Ethel Santmyer Rowley), that her grandfathers, William Burns Shaw and Harrison Santmyer, fought against each other during the war. I have found no evidence that Harrison actually fought in the Civil War. He was, however, involved in copper and wagon building during the War. Thus far, I have not been able to pinpoint his location during the War years. In 1860, Harrison lived in Hardy Co., VA (now WV). Prior to that, in 1854, he was in Rockingham Co., VA. I have to wonder if perhaps he may have returned to Hardy Co. to support the Union. Or perhaps, did he bring his wife and children back to Lost River to stay with her family, while he went off to serve in the Confederate, or, possibly the Union Army. Their sixth child, Aaron, was born in 1861. All previous children were born two years apart, followed by a three year gap between George and Aaron. Then there was not another birth until 1867. Could the reason for the six year gap be that Harrison was engaged in the War? By 1870, Harrison, now in MD, had buried Leah and their two youngest children, married again and started a second family. The family was in VA in 1876 and by 1879, had settled in PA. This is where they finally put their roots down in Fayette Co., Mt. Pleasant area. All his children from his first marriage, except Emily, were on their own by 1880. He died from a gun shot would, inflicted by his own gun. One story is that he was cleaning his gun and it went off accidently - another is he held the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

"Harrison's death was self-inflicted (of this I am positive) and he is buried in MT. Pleasant, PA cemetery. My father made the gravestone on his burial place." (Glenn's father J. Joseph is the son of Harrison and Catherine Howell Santmyer.) "Harrison was born in Shenandoah Co., VA in 1828. He died in 1905. My grandfather was a son of Barney Santmyer and Martha Elly Caine, both of Shenandoah Co., VA. Both were born and died there. They were of some substance and property. Barney's father was Jacob Santmyer and mother Jane Knapps. They were married in Frederick Co., VA in 1794. I have related Jacob back to Lancaster Co., PA where he was a member of the 2nd Lancaster Militia during the American Revolution in the 1770's (these records are in the PA archives). In the 1790's Jacob served in the VA Militia in Winchester, VA. Quite a number of Santmyers were in the Confederate army during that war including Harrison's brothers and nephews, - but not Harrison. He conducted a blacksmith and horse dealing business during the war period."

DIRECTIONS TO MT PLEASANT CEMETERY:
Take Rte 31, which becomes Main St. in the town of Mt. Pleasant; just on the edge of town, turn left at the corner of 31/Main and Raddock or Braddock St. At the corner is the Mt Pleasant Church of God. The cemetery is just a short distance down the road on the right. Catherine is buried beside Harrison. There are several other Santmyers buried in same area and two more graves closer to the cemetery road.

This from Linda Casey, July 2010: "My aunt, Gertrude Santmyer Dettling, told me that Harrison had worked in the mines and was told he was no longer needed, probably because of his age. He was despondent for almost a year when he shot himself in the bedroom. My mother was Melva Santmyer Devorak."

Since Harrison's son, James Jacob married and resided in Allegany Co., MD, I think it is a safe assumption that Alexander and William would also be in the same area of MD.

.........Gerilee Santmyers supplied a birth date as 1859 for Daniel, Izetta lists his birth as 1853. With either date it seems impossible that Frank born 4 Feb 1861 could be his son. I have 1886 as the date of marriage, which would fit with the birth date of 1887 for Infant Fnu. Also the the 1887 marriage fits with a birth date of 1853 or 1859. Thus, either the birth date is incorrect for Frank's birth or this is not the correct Frank Santmyer. I suggest this is not the correct Frank to connect with Daniel, since Mollie, wife of Frank, was born in 1862, and their marriage date is listed as 1884.

Update 1/22/00: Information received from Ron Santmyers, great grandson of Frank and Mary A. (Mollie) Mitchell Santmyers includes the following:

Frank Santmyers, born 1861Warren Co., VA, died 23 December 1941Warren Co., VA, was the son of Mildred A. and Daniel Santmyers. This Daniel (not Daniel P.) was born 1814 (based on age of 36 in 1850 census) or 1820 (per info from Ron Santmyers) in Shenandoah Co., VA and died in 1897 in Warren Co., VA. In addition to info from Ron Santmyers, the 1850 Warren Co., VA Census also lists the wife of Daniel as Mildred. I believe that Frank Santmyers born 1861 and his descendants were incorrectly attached to this Daniel P. and Mary L. Putman Santmyers.

Peter Lee Zentmeyer, prominent citizen and well-known farmer of near Stella, passed away at his home early Sunday morning, death due to a heart attack. He had been in declining health for the past several years.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery here.
The deceased was 79 years of age and is survived by his wife and two sons, Messrs. Edward of Martinsville and Leath of Stella.

"William H. Zentmire, now living on section 1, Belknap Township, where he owns and operates one hundred and ninety acres of land, has for the past twenty years been engaged in breeding registered shorthorn cattle and now makes a specialty of handling polled Durhams. He is a successful businessman and a worthy representative of agricultural interests in Pottawattamie County.

He was born in Warren County, Ohio, September 1, 1844. His father, David Zentmire, was a native of the same state and was of German ancestry. The paternal grandfather served as a soldier in the War of 1812.

David Zentmire was a carpenter by trade and followed that pursuit in early manhood, but afterward turned his attention to farming and became fairly well-to-do. His political allegiance was given to the Whig Party and he afterward supported the Republican Party. He married Diana Minick, who was born in Pennsylvania and was a member of the Quaker or Friends church. She represented one of the old Pennsylvania Dutch families. By her marriage she became the mother of the following named: Angeline, the wife of Robert J. Black, a retired farmer living in Chautauqua County, Kansas; Amanda, deceased; Samantha, who makes her home with her sister Angeline; William H.; Sylvester, deceased; Wilson, who is superintendent of the county infirmary of Mercer County, Illinois; Elizabeth, the wife of Hale McClure, a cattleman of North Dakota; George, a cattleman of Montana; Harry, who is engaged in farming near Big Mound, Iowa; Alice, the widow of Horace McLean, of Red Oak, Iowa; and Eva, the wife of Adam Hemingway and a resident of Red Oak, Iowa.

The usual experiences that fall to the lot of farm boys came to William H. Zentmire in his boyhood and youth. He attended the country schools and when not busy with his textbooks aided in the work of the fields or in the care of the stock. He has always followed farming and stock-raising, and upon coming to Iowa in the spring of 1872 he located at Big Grove, where he has since resided. He is now living on section 1, Belknap Township, where he owns and cultivates one hundred and ninety acres of land. A part of this is used for pasturage, and for the past twenty years Mr. Zentmire has been engaged in breeding registered shorthorn cattle, making a specialty at the present time of polled Durhams, of which he has a fine herd of thirty-five head. He has been very successful in tilling the soil and in raising stock and is recognized as a man of good business ability and unfaltering enterprise.

On the 22nd of April, 1872, Mr. Zentmire was married to Miss Eliza Kiddoo, who was born in Illinois in 1850. The became the parents of seven children, of whom Rena, Alva, Frederick and Elsie are all now deceased. The others are Etta, the wife of James O. May, pastor of the Broadway Methodist Church of Council Bluffs; Frank and Martha, both at home.

The parents are faithful and consistent members of the Methodist Church, in which Mr. Zentmire has long been an officer, serving also as a teacher of the bible class in the Sunday School for many years. In politics he is a Republican and has held several township offices. He is deeply interested in the welfare of his community, especially in its moral progress, and has labored untiringly and unceasingly for the upbuilding of the church and for the best interests of the community at large."

They lived on a farm until June 1880 when an epidemic of typhoid took the lives of Charles and Martha in Valley Twp, Rice Co. Their grandmother and an uncle came to Kansas to get their 3 small girls and took them back to family in Mercer Co, Illinois.

A Sudden Death
On Monday morning word was passed around that David Zentmire, one of our most respected citizens, who has lived among us for twenty-five years, had passed away on Sunday night at about ten o'clock. Knowing that he had been on the streets on Sunday evening when he went to consult with Dr. Smith about his wife who was down sick, many could hardly believe it true, but later information proved the rumor correct. He had gone home, ate his supper, and laid down on the couch. His daughter, Clara, later suggested that he retire, and she would care for the mother. he acted on her suggestion but after he laid down his wife noticed he breathed very hard and irregularly. She spoke to him and got no answer, and when she turned his head to the light she saw that he was dying. The daughter was called and she in turn called the neighbors. The doctor was called but he got there in time to only se him breathe his last. He had been active and cheerful all day and had not complained in the least.

A universal sigh of sympathy and regret was evidenced by the entire community as the news spread. Mr. Zentmire had, for all these years, been prominent in business circles, and everybody, both young and old, got a pleasant word from him whenever they met him. It seemed that he was a friend to everybody and that everybody was his friend.

He was born in Warren county, Ohio, September 27, 1840, hence he was nearly 63 years old. About the beginning of the war he went to Mason County, Illinois and enlisted soon after in Company K 85 Illinois Infantry, and served until the end of the war.

February 3, 1875, he was married to Miss Emma Carl, and they moved at once to Cherokee and built the house in which he died. His wife and four children survive him.

He had been a Mason ever since he was a young man, and was a prominent member of the G.A.R. under whose auspices he was buried. For several years he has been with the Cherokee Commercial Company.

Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning and nearly the whole town and surrounding community were present, the business houses being closed form ten to one o'clock. The services were held by Rev. W.T. Freeland, after which his comrades silently marched to the cemetery and laid him to rest.
