There is a Bernhard Nicholas Santmyer b.1735 listed in FamilySearch IGI and elsewhere as the father of Jacob and George Zentmeyer, which we believe to be an unfortunate fabrication by a misguided LDS compiler, combining our ancestor Bernhard Zentmeyer b.1740 with another actual immigrant, Nicholas Sandmeier, who arrived on 9 Oct 1775 on the good ship King of Prussia. I have convinced FamilySearch to quarantine this record, although no one can remove it entirely except for its contributor, who will not respond to us. This bogus record also lists the surname of Bernhard's first wife as 'Luther,' for which we have found no evidence, see Catharina LNU, but unfortunately this fabricated 'Luther' record has generated entries on 60+ trees on Ancestry.com.

The deed by which Christopher conveyed his farm to his son Daniel was also his will, a shrewd legal strategy, see 'Third' below. But it is an interesting document for several reasons.

First, John Wesley Zentmyer was a special grandson to Christopher and Barbara Zentmeyer. When the will was written in 1824, there was a special provision for John to receive two hundred dollars from the estate at Christopher's death. By 1824 Christopher had as many as eighteen additional grandchildren, none of whom were similarly provided for. The will also indicates that one John Zentmyer was living nearby at that time, and since Christopher's son John was living in Brownsville, Virginia by then, one must conclude the John residing near Christopher's farm must have been John Wesley Zentmyer. The will also provided for a shed to be built and finished adjoining John Zentmyer's house for Christopher to enjoy during the remainder of his natural life. So it appears John Wesley Zentmyer and his wife Eleanor cared for grandparents Christopher and Barbara into their old age, and were therefore rewarded in the will.

Second, the will illuminates for us the diversity of economic activity on the farm. There are references to crops of wheat, rye, corn, hay, and apples; a stable with cows, horses, cattle, and hogs; a weaver shop, and wool, so presumably sheep; and firewood production indicating logging.

Third, the will presented an interesting legal question, namely do certain economic provisions in a grant deed survive a foreclosure. The deed stated that "Daniel Zentmeyer engages to give to his father Christopher Zentmeyer yearly and every year during his natural life and the life of his wife Barbara twenty bushels of wheat, twenty bushels of rye, and twenty bushels of corn, also two good loads of hay, and one third of the rows of apple trees divided the short way and pasture two cows and one horse with his own cattle also to let them keep four hogs which are to run with his hogs." Neighbor George Harbaugh took title to the farm in 1828 after a foreclosure sale, and ceased fulfilling the provisions Christopher had specified in the deed. The Zentmeyers sued Harbaugh. The court held: "I look upon it as a covenant to pay rent in kind; and if it be, it is a covenant running with the land, and the defendant is clearly liable; for, upon such covenants, which concern real property, or the estate therein, the assignee of the lessee is liable for an action for a breach of covenant after the assignment of the estate to him." So Harbaugh was required to continue to supply the goods and services to Christopher as required in the deed, a much better result than had Christopher simply written a will.

(Maria) Magdelena Zentmeyer, born in Bischwiller, Bas-Rhin, France. Maria was the family's female Saint's name, given to all of the girls. Married Johannes Lauman 22 Feb 1769 Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. They moved to Middlebrook, Augusta Co., Virginia around 1800. She died after 1819, and because she was a life-long Lutheran and stalwart at St. Johns, it is believed she is buried there.

(Johann) Jacob Zentmeyer, third surviving son of (Johann) Bernhard Zentmeyer and (Maria) Salome Roth Zentmeyer. Birth year on headstone does not agree with church records in Bischwiller. A blacksmith and farmer, he lived in Cocalico Township, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, and farmed at least 50 acres there on land between present-day Lincoln Gardens Rd. and Hackman Rd.

The birth record below is the only instance of Görg that has been found in the record. It is assumed that he died young, but no death record has been found.

Notes:

Jacob and Jane moved from Frederick Co. to Shenandoah Co. after 1794 and before 1810.* Jacob served in the Virginia Militia from Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia in the 1790's. He possibly served in the Revolutionary War. As only Jane signed the marriage permission for Barney in 1816, it is a strong indication that Jacob had died prior to that date.

*The sections of Frederick and Shenandoah Counties, where they lived, were very close together. This area later became part of Warren Co. when it was formed in 1836.

*Present spelling is Santmyer, at least in my branch of Santmyer's, and also in Glenn's. Other branches spell it as Santmyers and Santymire. Of all the names in my Family Tree, this is the one name I have encountered with the most different spellings. Some spellings are so far removed that they are difficult to recognize as Santmyer. Spelling variations: Santmyer, Santmyers, Santmire, Santmier, Santmiers, Santmeyer, Santymire, Santemeyer, Santamyer, Santimire, Santingere, St. Myer, St. Meyer, Sauntmire, Sanbaire, Santaire, Saintmyers, Sanskrives, St. Moyers, Sandmeyer, Saulmire and Sandmeier.

Johannes Zentmeyer, grandson of Johann Bernhard Zentmeyer, emigrant ancestor of the Zentmeyers in the US. The surname was also recorded as 'Centmeyer,' 'Sentmeier,' 'C. Meyer,' 'C. Mayer,' 'St. Moyer,' and 'St. Mire.' Johannes married Barbary Windle about 1790. He was an early member of the Little River church, later renamed Zion Lutheran Church, which still stands in Floyd, Virginia. Rev. Robert J. Miller, a circuit preacher, wrote in 1813, "In the evening we went home with Mr. Zentmeyer, who appears to have a sense of divine things, and has a serious and promising family of children."

It is not clear why Johannes is listed in the 1810 and 1820 Census in Christiansburg, and in the 1830 Census in (La) Fayette. But there can be no doubt as to the identity of these three families, as the number and ages of the wife and children in the Censuses exactly match Johannes' family.

"The settlement at Mather's Mill, on the Miami, (Miami river, Ed) on the Lebanon & Wilmington road, was earlier than 1807, David Van Schoyck and Lewis Rees being there before that time. Lewis Rees built the mill in 1807, when it was disposed of to Richard Mather, who settled there the same year. George Zentmire settled the same year some distance below the mill, and built the dam for Mather. His cabin was by a spring below the mill. In addition to the mill Richard Mather set up a store and smith shop; he brought with him Jacob Ashmead and Richard Taylor as millers. Jacob Horn, a blacksmith; Jacob Longstreth, storekeeper; Samuel Couden, an Irishman; John Frazee and others came the same reason. George Zentmire was a Virginian (George lived in Virginia, but was born in Pennsylvania -Ed) of German descent, spoke the German language fluently and was a Revolutionary soldier. (actually, War of 1812 -Ed) George Zentmire purchased a farm on the river below Freeport, (Freeport was renamed Oregonia in 1882 -Ed) where he died May 20, 1836; his wife, Elizabeth Dunn, died February 18, 1854. Their family, four sons and four daughters, are scattered, one son, Rev. Samuel Zentmire, living at Morrow. The river at this time was amply stocked with fish; brush drags were made to be used as seines, and great quantities were obtained. Fifteen or more deer in one herd was a common sight. Many of the oldest inhabitants assert with great earnestness, that a fight with Indians on the Zentmire farm, and also a short distance above Freeport, took place sometime previous to the first settlement, but no direct evidence of such events can be obtained." --History of Warren County, Ohio, W. Jacob Zentmeyer, grandson of Johann Bernhard Zentmeyer through his son Jacob, moved into the Buffalo Valley around 1810, and his descendants lived there until well into the early 1900s. The Buffalo Valley was also the home of Nathaniel Strayhorn, who moved there in the late 1700s and whose offspring populated the region until the late 1800s.

" . . John Zentmyers, a wagonmaker by trade, who, coming from Lancaster County, located near Upton, Franklin County, in 1817, but later farmed in Antrim Township, and still later worked at his trade in Peters Township. He died about 1854 (sic) in Antrim Township, and was interred in the old United Bretheran cemetery at Greencastle, a man highly respected during life, and sincerely mourned at death."

Burials in the Bretheran Cemetery were removed to Cedar Hill Cemetery in July of 1958. A bronze plaque there states, "This hallowed place is dedicated to the memory of those originally buried in the cemetery of the First E. U. B. Church, Greencastle, between 1812-1889, and removed to this plot July 1958." Unfortunately, no individual names are noted.

"As for Adam, he definitely died in Lancaster Co. The Naperville Clarion of October 19, 1870 carried this item in the 'Gossip columns": "Mr Adam Zentmyer, the oldest man in Copenhagen, is about to shake the dust from his feet, turn his back upon that burg and remove to Pennsylvania. He has sale on the 28th inst., and has three of the best cows in this county, which will be sold." The diary of Jacob Zentmyer, grandson of Adam, says on December 25, 1872: "We hat A poor chrismus no fun ataul we hat A turkey for diner Anuff to Eat and we are all well today we got A letter from M L Miller she rides that grandfather Zentmyer died he was 86 years & 5 month & 12 day old only sick from Sat till Sunday Night cold it began to Snow this Evening" Spelling and punctuation are as in the original. Notes:

Daniel is buried is buried in the Old Frederick Cemetery here in Warren Co. Va. It is located near the Waterlick area today. You can read the info on Daniel?s headstone that says he died in 1897 at 77 years old. There is a slight problem there as that reporting of his age would have him being born four years after his father died.

His wife Amelia, as shown on the marriage bond, also know as Millie, Milla, and Mildred Ann, misrepresented his age on every census until he was at home at the time the 1880 census was taken where he stated he was 68. She also changed her age on every census.

Daniel was most probably born in 1812-1813. If he was born later than that date he would have been drafted in the Confederate Army in 1864 when the draft age was 50. He was not listed in the Home Guard as a person too old to serve but still be required to fight if needed.

I have not yet found definite proof that Daniel is the son of Jane Knapp and Jacob Santmire. However, he resided only a few doors from Jane Knapp Santmire (1850 Warren Co., VA Census) and his dob was just one year later than Leah Santmyers (d/o Jacob and Jane Knapp Santmire). This certainly is not proof, but could be a lead as to the parentage of Daniel.

According to a letter written by John William Zentmeyer to Rev. William DeShazo, Catharine and Burke Priddy moved to Ohio. In The History of Kansas City, Missouri, it is written that soon after 1832 they moved from Virgina to Warren County, Ohio. And that Burke owned a plantation and a number of slaves in Virginia, but became a teacher in Ohio. The 1840 Census has Burke Priddy in Union, Warren Ohio.

"Johannes died in 1844 and was the father of John N. Zentmeyer. John N. had been clerk of the courts from about 1837-1855. As a matter of fact, the courthouse had a pic of every court clerk since the beginning of time - except for John N. Zentmeyer. So I gave them one and it now hangs in the courthouse with the others. John moved the family to Mayo Forge, Virginia in 1855 for benefit of his wife who was in in poor health - it was much warmer in Mayo Forge than up on Floyd mountain. His kids, Peter and Edwin, lived in Mayo Forge, Peter had three boys, one was my Grandfather, John Edwin. By the way, the house in Mayo Forge, built in 1852, every brick, nail and board made on site by slaves, is still owned by the Zentmeyers. According to a letter written by John William Zentmeyer to Rev. William DeShazo, John was a surveyor prior to becoming Clerk of the Court. After his marriage to Martha Penn, John and Martha made their home in the Floyd Courthouse. They moved to Patrick County in 1855, and John engaged in the mercantile business in Mayo Forge for the remainder of his life. Sons Edwin and Peter were associated with him.



According to Chataigne's 1888-89 Virginia Business Directory for Patrick County, 'Zentmeyer & Sanders' were Tobacco Manufacturers in Mayo Forge.

"William H. Zentmire was born in Warren County, Ohio, September 1, 1844. His father, David Zentmire, was a native of the same state and was of German ancestry. The paternal grandfather served as a soldier in the War of 1812. David Zentmire was a carpenter by trade and followed that pursuit in early manhood, but afterward turned his attention to farming and became fairly well-to-do. His political allegiance was given to the Whig Party and he afterward supported the Republican Party. He married Diana Minick, who was born in Pennsylvania and was a member of the Quaker or Friends church. She represented one of the old Pennsylvania Dutch families. By her marriage she became the mother of the following named: Angeline, the wife of Robert J. Black, a retired farmer living in Chautauqua County, Kansas; Amanda, deceased; Samantha, who makes her home with her sister Angeline; William H.; Sylvester, deceased; Wilson, who is superintendent of the county infirmary of Mercer County, Illinois; Elizabeth, the wife of Hale McClure, a cattleman of North Dakota; George, a cattleman of Montana; Harry, who is engaged in farming near Big Mound, Iowa; Alice, the widow of Horace McLean, of Red Oak, Iowa; and Eva, the wife of Adam Hemingway and a resident of Red Oak, Iowa."

Benjamin G. Zentmyer was enrolled on the 11th day of September, 1862 at Ephrata, Pennsylvania in Co. C, 17th Regiment of Pennsylvania Cavalry Volunteers to serve three years or during the Civil War, and mustered into service as a Sergeant on the 27th day of September, 1862 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was taken prisoner at Ocoguan City, Virginia on the 27th day of December, 1862 and after being paroled, was sent to parole camp at Annapolis, Marylend., where he contracted smallpox. This statement was from Major Weidner H. Spera of the Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was sent home on leave the 3rd day of April, 1863. Jno. H. Shink M.D. saw him on the day he reached home. He stated that Benjamin G. Zentmyer's smallpox was in the secondary stage and was beyond medical aid. He lived until the 21st day of April, 1863.

Henry received a common school education, and in his youth was engaged in farming. He devoted nine months to the blacksmith's trade, after which he served an apprenticeship of three years to the trade of painting and paper-hanging, with his brother Benjamin. After working three years as a journeyman, he went into business for himself, and has built up a very large connection employing twelve men, also conducting a store for the sale of paint and wallpaper. Among many large contracts he has had was that for Milton Hershey, including the work on all his dwellings and his large chocolate plant, which alone covers more than six acres. Mr. Zentmyer has several fine properties in the place besides his residence, which is a spacious and commodious double house, recently erected by himself. His political principles are those of the Democratic Party.
