Obituary - Samuel Zentmyer, who died at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Saturday, August 28, 1926 was a son of Rev. John and Sarah (Conoway) Zentmyer, and was born near Trenton, Iowa October 28, 1847. His parents were originally from Pennsylvania. They removed from there to Ohio, and then came on to Iowa. Their family consisted of David, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, Lydia, Samuel, and Catherine. All but the last named, who is now Mrs. William Price of Pomona, Calif., are deceased. Their father, Rev. John Zentmyer, was a well-known and useful minister in the Church of God in this part of Iowa. In January of 1880, Samuel Zentmyer and Elmira J. Crumbly were united in marriage. Two children, John Ray Zentmyer, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and Everett Zentmyer, Duluth, Minn., were born to them. His wife dying on June 3, 1886, he later married Jennie Tarr, who also departed this life, leaving two children, Mrs. Lillie A. Gallup, Denver, Colo., and Geo. Witte Zentmyer, who died five years ago last July. Three grandchildren and many other friends and relatives survive. Deceased was an earnest Christian man. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of this city. He suffered much during his last illness but bore as best he could the pangs of death. His father died on September 1, 1874, at thte age of sixty-one, and his mother passed away on January 11, 1852 when she was forty-one. --from the Mt.Pleasant Daily News, Tuesday, 31 Aug 1926, page 1.

So, evidently after both of Samuel's wives died, he was unable or unwilling to care for all of his four children. In the 1900 US Census, only first-born John Ray Zentmeyer was living with him. Son Everett was living with Weir family, and son George was living with the Jay family. It is unclear where daughter Lillie was living, but she was not with Samuel.

Samuel married Ella F. CROMLEY 9 Feb 1881. Ella was born 1858; died 3 Jun 1886. [Group Sheet]
