Bernhard's Headstone

Southwest corner of Union (White Oak)
Cemetery, Penryn, Pennsylvania.

Although spelled 'Bernhart Zentmeier' on his headstone, this spelling was rarely seen; the most common spelling in written records was (Johann) Bernhard Zentmeyer. 'Johann' was his Saints' name, which was also bestowed on all of his sons. A German from Württemberg, he married (Maria) Salome Roth 16 February 1739 in Bischwiller, Bas-Rhin, France. This region was known as Alsace, (Elsaß) and as recently as World War I was part of Germany. The family emigrated to Philadelphia, 22 November 1752 from Rotterdam aboard the good ship Phoenix, Ruben Honor, captain. Signed loyalty oath 'Bernhard Zendmeÿer.
